Support unnoticed

The toddler who is learning to walk doesn't ask for help.
The loving parent simply reaches down and offers a finger to hold.
Tiny feet, chubby thighs, wobbly knees all work together as they learn to fight gravity --
all while the loving parent smiles, delighting in their progress
because they know the joy of a sunrise walk,
an evening stroll,
a race home from school,
a mountain hike,
wet sand between the toes...
All of this is in store for the struggling, stumbling baby.
The loving parent lets the child push to fatigue, even tears, because they know what is happening underneath the frustration.
Growth.
Muscle memory.
Tiny experiences that form a database to pull from.
The frustration is all part of the growth.
The loving parent reaches down and scoops the baby up,
pouring assurance and love into her heart,
wisely knowing the child is destined for more, but has had enough for now.
They know what is happening inside of the comfort.
Growth.
Recovery.
Healing.
Strength forming, one layer at a time.
In our moments of tearful crumbling, may we remember the loving support and wisdom surrounding us. There is so much more going on underneath and inside.
We can trust as we stumble.
There's so much more than we can see.
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
(Classic hymn, written 1787)
