Small mirror syndrome

courage personal growth

It's really hard to tell how in-shape (or otherwise) you are if you only look at your reflection in small mirrors. That's what happened to me during the COVID-19 pandemic when everything was shut down and all we did was sit at home for 18 months. We were in a townhome at the time, which only had these tiny little mirrors. I remember visiting my friend Jessica and being absolutely shocked to see my reflection in her large, beautiful mirrors. It was then that I realized that I had only been gauging my physical health by what I saw in the mirror at home (and I thought I was doing pretty darn great! lol). And boy, did I have some serious work to do! But once I realized it, then I changed my habits and got back on track.

It was a great life lesson to me, that if we never take a real look at where we are in certain areas we're going to assume we're doing just fine. If we courageously choose to take a look at a more comprehensive reflection, we can more accurately see what needs attention. It's the harder choice, but honest assessment is the only way to improve.

Small reflections don't actually make problems smaller.

What area of your life could use a broader glance? What will you do to take that step?
