"I'm a good girl, I am!"

One of my favorite movies of all time is My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle. I've remember watching it with my mom as a little girl, singing and dancing along to "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?". And that stunning scene of her in the dress at the top of the steps before the ball....🤩

When Eliza first becomes Professor Higgins's pupil, then consequently starts the process of getting cleaned up, she cries out over and over, (in her horrific accent), "I'm a good girl, I am!!"

Facing a time of change, she's reminding herself and everyone around her of who she is at her core. While Eliza didn't see that their intentions did indeed match who she really was (even better than she realized, especially in Colonel Pickering's case), she went to that truth when she felt unsteady. I think we'd all do well to follow her example, of holding strong to who we are when outside influences try to put ideals on us.

Leading with "I'm a good girl (or guy), I am!" sets a standard of excellence that we can hold outside influences to in comparison. If they match, we can accept. If they don't, then we can let them go with freedom. No FOMO, no people-pleasing, no regrets. It's not personal; it's just a mismatch.
