Forgiveness

Today is Good Friday, where people all over the world remember the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. In the face of unthinkable cruelty, as He hung on the cross, he pled with the Father on behalf of the people who did this: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."

How He was able to respond in this way goes far beyond my ability to comprehend. I won't try to understand it, but I will try my best to follow His example.

Because of His atoning sacrifice and His loving example of forgiveness, we can find the strength to forgive. Through Him, there is strength available beyond our own. This is the harder choice, but so worth the effort invested in letting go.

Because of Him, we don't have to carry the burden of hatred or grudges. If He could say, "They know not what they do" about people who wrongfully accused, beat, and crucified Him, then we can say the same -- even if the person hurt us on purpose. We are definitely no better than Jesus, so we can humbly follow His example.

I love this quote and powerful promise:

"I repeat my call to end the conflicts in your life. Exercise the humility, courage, and strength required both to forgive and to seek forgiveness. …

… I invite you to seek an end to a personal conflict that has weighed you down. Could there be a more fitting act of gratitude to Jesus Christ for His Atonement? If forgiveness presently seems impossible, plead for power through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ to help you. As you do so, I promise personal peace and a burst of spiritual momentum."

- Russell M. Nelson | President, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

This Easter weekend, let's accept this invitation and watch for this promise of personal peace and added spiritual momentum. I know it's possible...because of Him.
