Fear in love's clothing

co-working with kids fear motherhood personal growth relationships

When I first started my business (out of strong necessity to help support our family while my husband was in law school), I had this fear that my decision to work from home instead of dedicate all of my attention to motherhood would break my kids.

It feels silly and a little embarrassing to admit now, but these concerns were very real, even if unfounded. Maybe you're feeling something similar. In case you are, I'm happy to tell you that today, almost 15 years later, the opposite is true: working from home didn't break my kids; it actually strengthened them. Because it stretched all of us in beautiful and challenging ways.

Starting my business forced me to learn how to embrace struggle as a positive thing. That gave me the firsthand experience to talk my kids through their own struggles, and to take their hands and move through them together. It helped me show them how to own our mistakes and setbacks. It helped me show them how we celebrate the successes and thank God for His hand in them. It helped me introduce them to incredible people doing amazing things in the world.

My fear when I first started was disguised as love and concern for the well-being of our children, but looking back it really was just fear in a love costume. If I had let that fear hold me back from starting, I would have missed out on this rich library of experiences and connection I've been blessed with.
